What Is Clomiphene?
This medication is used to treat infertility in women. It works by stimulating an increase in the amount of hormones that support the growth and release of a mature egg (ovulation). This medication is not recommended for women whose ovaries no longer make eggs properly (primary pituitary or ovarian failure).

How long will the treatment last?
You start taking clomifene about three to five days into your monthly menstrual cycle, and continue taking it for about five days. Ovulation generally occurs five to nine days after the last pill. Your doctor will usually monitor you for at least the first cycle of treatment using ultrasound to see whether your ovaries are preparing an egg follicle and releasing the egg into one of your fallopian tubes.

Most women will go through a maximum of three to six drug cycles: it can take a month or two of drug therapy to start ovulating regularly. If it doesn’t prove successful after six months, your doctor will probably start discussing other options with you. However, it is recommended that treatment can continue for up to 12 cycles, probably with a gap between courses of treatment, because there is more chance of ovulation starting if treatment is continued for this long.

If you have polycystic ovary syndrome this treatment may not work for you, as 15 to 40 per cent of women with PCOS are resistant to clomifene (Beck et al 2005). This is more common in women who have a BMI (body mass index) greater than 25. In this case, your doctor may recommend that you try to lose some weight. Even a modest weight loss of about five per cent of your body weight can help improve your chances of ovulation.

Your doctor may also prescribe metformin, an insulin-sensitising drug. Metformin can help you respond to clomifene and has been shown to increase the chances of ovulating and getting pregnant.

Missed Dose:
If you miss a dose, contact your doctor promptly for further instructions. Do not double the dose to catch up unless your doctor directs you to do so.

Storage:
Store at room temperature between 59-86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C). Keep in a closed container protected from heat, light, and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medicines away from children and pets.
